During my final year of University I was granted a place on the Enterprise Fellowship Scheme (EFS). Amongst other things, EFS provided me with a credible business address (The University of Warwick Science Park), ample room to work plus access to mentors, funding and a host of networking opportunities.

EFS was a fantastic initiative and, whilst it wasn’t make or break for my business, it has to take the majority of credit for the fact I was able to go from concept to sales in less than 6 months. My only criticism of the scheme is actually directed at the participants, many of whom found themselves burdened by the idea that they were “starting a business” and subsequently spent far too much time planning and less (or no) time trying to sell their product.

Sadly, EFS is no longer around at the University of Warwick but it does live on in the form of SPEED (Student Placements for Entrepreneurs in Education), which operates at Birmingham City, Coventry, Keele, Staffordshire and Wolverhampton universities. It is through my links with SPEED that I got to meet the guys behind Stone’s Throw Media, who offer a range of video production services in Wolverhampton (and beyond).

ST Media is run by two very affable guys, Mike Chinn and Matt Weston. I’m delighted to say they didn’t fall into the “starting a business” trap and immediately started selling, making full use of SPEED (even signing them up as a client)!

In an attempt to further their business they are addressing their SEO strategy and we met up for a few hours to discuss the most important part: on-site search engine optimisation. The guys quickly got to grips with the basics and I am pleased to see they are already putting theory into practice: working on their meta titles/descriptions, improving their image names and, most importantly, getting their videos onto their website.

Few people seem to realise just how powerful video can be. Aside from the fact YouTube is the second most used search engine, videos often feature near the top of Google (and other) search engine results pages. I’m confident that ST Media know the drill and their use of video will give them a much needed SEO advantage over their competition.

Right now the guys are working on “video production wolverhampton” and I note they are already up to page 1 of the Google SERPS. At this rate I have no doubt they will be in top spot for that (and many other searches) by the end of the year.
