More on the Smarter Card

In this post on the SPLAT card I talked about a potential joint venture with company owner, Tom Smith. The SmarterCard and the SPLAT card are, in essence, identical. Both cards grant the bearer numerous student discounts, so it made sense to team up given our launch markets were identical – Warwickshire and the West Midlands; covering Aston University, the University of Birmingham, Coventry University and the University of Warwick.

I have now heard back from Tom, confirming my suspicion that giving away 50% of his business wasn’t acceptable. Despite this putting the SmarterCard and the SPLAT card in direct competition with one another I would like to wish Tom the very best in his venture. That might seem a little strange, however anyone starting their own business, particularly in this difficult economic climate, deserves a pat on the back. In this case, I think Tom has done his <don SEO hat> ESTEMPLE analysis <remove SEO hat> as market conditions are perfect for a discount card – student or otherwise.

Ok then, the SmarterCard now has local competion. Time to ramp it up!

You may have noted from my introduction to the Smarter Card a Duncan Snelgrove named as Business Development Manager. I’ve known Duncan for years – he’s a Batchelor of the Arts and a Master of Science – which sounds damn cool if nothing else. Duncan is in charge of liaising with all potential and existing clients which is, of course, any business that chooses to offer a student discount through the SmarterCard. In recent days this has involved signing exclusivity agreements to ensure offers on the SmarterCard are not available elsewhere (sorry).

Nicos Gelis, my trusted ‘best man’ is also in the frame, to cope with the additional workload associated with expansion into Nottingham, Leeds, York and Sheffield. It is more than likely a further pair of hands will be required when we tackle the South of England and again for universities and colleges in London.
